Procession with cross against Ukraine joining NATO and transferring Kiev Caves Monastery to the state held in Kiev

Moscow, March 17, Interfax – About 1,000 Orthodox believers of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church participated in the procession with cross in Kiev last Sunday thus protesting against “new anti-Orthodox actions of Ukrainian authorities,” its organizers told Interfax-Religion.

“It is also pressing on the canonical Orthodox Church as the street where the Kiev Laura of the Caves is located is now named after Hetman Ivan Mazepa excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church,” their statement reads as it was conveyed to Interfax on Monday.

The participants are displeased with President Yushchenko’s recent decree on exemption of Kiev Laura of the Caves from the Church and “forced involvement of Ukraine in NATO coalition alien and hostile to Orthodox people.”

The procession with cross organized by the Union of Orthodox brotherhoods and All-Ukrainian Orthodox brotherhood of Alexander of Neva proceeded from the Laura’s Assumption Cathedral and marched along the central street of the Ukrainian capital to the monument to Prince Vladimir.

The clergy proclaimed anathema, among excommunicated was the head of the self-proclaimed Kiev Patriarchate Filaret Denisenko.

The statement says that Orthodox people of Ukraine are decided to oppose “anti-Orthodox, anti-church and anti-national plans of present day Ukrainian authorities.” The first step is to organize mass All-Ukrainian processions with cross. The next is to take place on March 20 in Kiev “against intake of Ukraine in NATO.”
