28 March 2008, 10:08Russian Islamic universities criticize bans of Muslim literature
Kazan, March 28, Interfax - The presidents of several Russian Islamic universities have criticized the practice whereby books are banned unilaterally, by court, and are put on a list of banned literature without release information.
"We are alarmed by the very mechanism of banning the books. What we see today in this area is some primitive, unclear, medieval practice," President of the Kazan-based Russian Islamic University Rafik Mukhametshin said at a press conference in Kazan.
In late 2007 media outlets published a list of extremist literature, which contained only book titles and no other release information - the publisher, the year of publishing and so on.
"The way this list was made is inadequate and unprofessional, it raises too many questions. Yes, there is a problem concerning the content of the books, the list is long, and there are things to discuss. But first we must deal with the problem of the banning mechanism. The form in which the list was submitted is unacceptable," the university president said.
Maksud Sadikov of the Institute of Theology and Religion Science (in Dagestan) has agreed with him.
"Such an approach - banning by a list - is not good. Each book should be listed along with information as to when it was published and by who and what it is about. Otherwise the whole of literature could be banned," Sadikov said. |
