11 July 2008, 14:36Chechnya's largest mosque opens in Grozny
Grozny, July 11, Interfax - Chechnya's largest mosque, which can accommodate 3,000 people, opened in downtown Grozny near the central market place on Friday.
The solemn opening ceremony was attended by MP Adam Demilkhanov, Chechen Mufti Sultan Mirzayev and thousands of local residents.
The mosque, built in the late 1990s, was completely destroyed during the two wars, and residents of downtown Grozny had to go to the suburbs of the Chechen capital to pray, the mufti said.
Russia's largest mosque will be built soon in the Leninsky district of Grozny, Mirzayev said. |
