N. Caucasus Muslims urge parties to Georgian-S. Ossetian conflict to stop violence

Cherkessk, August 11, Interfax - The Coordinating Center of the Muslims of the North Caucasus expressed its concerns about the armed hostilities under way in South Ossetia in a statement signed by the center's president, Ismail Berdiyev.

"It is absolutely obvious that armed confrontation is not capable of undoing the most complicated knot of problems and disagreements that have accumulated in this region. Dozens of people have already been killed, and thousands of others have been left without shelter and food. The peacekeeping process has been disrupted," the center said in a statement.

"All the responsibility for these developments rests with the Georgian leadership. It would be wrong to allow the brotherly Ossetian people to become a victim of criminal politics," it said.

The Muslim Ummah of the North Caucasus urged the Georgian leadership to "stop following advice from across the ocean, immediately halt the military actions, and not violate the mountainous laws of neighborliness."

The statement also calls on international organizations, the Russian leadership, and Russian and Georgian public figures to do all they can to stop bloodshed and resolve the conflict peacefully.

"We are praying to Allah to inspire politicians with wisdom, protect innocent people, and impose peace on the blessed land of the Caucasus," it said.
