19 June 2009, 14:46Religious leaders offer G8 their conception of shared security
Rome, June 19, Interfax – Participants in the 4th Summit of the Religious Leaders offered to G8 Summit a conception of “shared security.”
“We add the word “shared” to draw attention to a moral conviction: the wellbeing of each is related to the wellbeing of others and to our environment. Shared security focuses on the fundamental inter relatedness of all persons and the environment,” the participants in the religious summit said in the final document.
Leaders of the world religions and spiritual traditions hope to prove that “to address today’s challenges a new moral paradigm of global policy is needed”.
“Ultimately we are convinced that to overcome violence justice with compassion and forgiveness are necessary and possible,” the document further reads.
Religious leaders believe that shared security is concerned with the full continuum of human relations from relationship amongst individuals to the ways that people are organized in nations and states. Thus, “the security of one actor in international relations must not be detrimental to another.”
Those international leaders who are responsible for global decision-making must act transparently and be open to the contribution of all involved, G8 religious leaders remind.
