10 August 2009, 13:40Suspected Islamist killed outside Dushanbe
Dushanbe, August 10, Interfax - A possible member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has been shot dead in the Tajik village of Arbobkhotun, five kilometers east of Dushanbe, a source in Tajikistan's Interior Ministry told Interfax on Monday.
Weapons, ammunition and extremist books were found in the man's hideout.
"Citizen of Tajikistan Lutfullo Tursunov fired shots on servicemen of the Interior Ministry's special operations units when they tried to detain him. Servicemen fired back, lethally wounding him," the source said.
"The information available to us suggests that Tursunov was an active member of IMU, which was confirmed by the extremist literature and a Kalashnikov assault rifle with cartridges and grenades found in his house," he said.
The Tajik Interior Ministry reported last week that Tajikistan's Interior Ministry and State National Security Committee completed a counter-terrorist operation in the southeastern part of the country, which began on July 8, 2009.
Founded in 1996 and blacklisted as a particularly dangerous terrorist organization by the United States, Russia and the Central Asian countries, the IMU is especially active in the Fergana valley at the junction of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, a shelter to the majority of IMU terrorists calling for the violent overthrow of Central Asian governments and the creation of an Islamic caliphate in Central Asia.
