Putin gives icon to Orthodox church in Beijing

Beijing, October 13, Interfax - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has visited the Assumption church, which is located on the premises of the Russian embassy in Beijing.

This year the church was rebuilt in the image of a cathedral that appeared on the premises of the Russian Spiritual Mission in 1902.

On Tuesday the church was consecrated by Bishop of Yegoryevsk Mark, who is also head of the Moscow Patriarchate's Secretariat for Foreign Institutions.

During his visit Putin presented the Orthodox church with a Protection of the Virgin Mary icon.

"This icon is more than a hundred years old, and we would like to leave it here, in this church," the Russian Prime Minister said.
