Patriarch Kirill to visit Baku on November 6 and meet with Ilia II

Moscow, October 26, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia is to visit Baku early in November.

“His Holiness Patriarch Kirill is expected to visit Azerbaijan on November 6 to participate in two jubilees, the 60th birthday of Chairman of Caucasian Muslims Office, Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pasha-zade and the 10th anniversary of restoring the Baku and Caspian Diocese,” head of the Synodal Church and Society Department Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin told an Interfax-Religion correspondent.

He confirmed the information received earlier from the Georgian Patriarchate that Patriarch Kirill planned to meet with Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II.

“His Holiness Patriarch Ilia is expected to visit Baku the same day. If all plans remain in force, the primates of the two Churches would be able to hold a meeting,” Fr. Vsevolod said.

At the same time, he noted that this meeting would not have any “special status.”

“It’s natural that both primates will find some time to communicate with each other, when visiting Baku. No special status is given to this meeting,” the interviewee of the agency said.

In their turn, organizers of Azerbaijan jubilee celebrations denied information of the Georgian side that Pope Benedict XVI of Rome was to visit Baku these days. According to them, Vatican State Secretary Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone was to represent the Roman Catholic Church at the Baku celebrations and convey participants the Pontiff’s message.”
