Russian Constitutional Court outlaws death penalty forever

St. Petersburg, November 19, Interfax - The Constitutional Court has banned death penalty in Russia forever, a source at the court press office told Interfax on Thursday.

"This is not the extension of the death penalty moratorium. This is a permanent ban," he said.

The Constitutional Court ruled that Russian courts would not apply death penalty after January 1, 2010, when the last constituent - the Chechen Republic - acquired the right to jury trials.
