Russian Church calls to enshrine in law Church cooperation with religious organizations

Moscow, December 1, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchate wants the government to set targets for Russia's development jointly with the Church.

"The state and the Russian Orthodox Church must jointly decide in an open discussion what their common values are and what modernization tasks must be accomplished," representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church and of the Just Russia party said in a joint statement after a meeting in the State Duma.

The statement, made available to Interfax-Religion, says that laws must be made, regulating the state's strategic partnership with federal and regional traditional religious communities with high public standing and capable of fulfilling socially important projects.

In July 2009, the Russian Orthodox Church agreed to cooperate more strongly with the Just Russia party. It was decided that the party would acquaint the Moscow Patriarchate with the plan for the State Duma's work, and confer with it whenever queries arise in order to avoid misunderstanding.

Executive secretary of the Patriarch's Council of Experts in Economy and Ethics Pavel Shashkin said that the Church has worked out proposals it would like to be taken into account in the strategy for Russia's socioeconomic development until 2020. The proposals need to be discussed with the leading political parties, he said.
