Hizb ut-Tahrir supporters sentenced in Tajikistan

Dushanbe, January 27, Interfax - A court in the city of Khujand in northern Tajikistan has handed down prison sentences to ten members of the Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamic group, a court spokesman told Interfax over the phone on Wednesday.

"The trial of members of the Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamist extremist party has finished. Ten activists of this party have received prison sentences ranging from eight years and six months to 15 years and six months," the spokesman said.

The court convicted the defendants of publicly calling for measures to overthrow the authorities in Tajikistan, setting up a criminal community and inciting ethnic, racial and religious hatred, he said.

"All the convicted [members] are citizens of Tajikistan living in the Sogd region," the spokesman said.

The Sogd region is located in Central Asia's Fergana Valley on the border with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The largest number of supporters of Hizb ut-Tahrir, which was officially outlawed in Tajikistan in 2001, have been detained in this area.

News of Hizb ut-Tahrir supporters being detained in Tajikistan are reported almost every month.
