Russian Church to assist U.S. Department of State on annual report on freedom of religion

Moscow, January 29, Interfax - The head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archbishop Hilarion has offered American Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle the help in preparing of the U.S. Department of State's annual report on freedom of religion across the world.

The Archbishop reiterated "the importance of the work done by the U.S. Department of State to prepare the annual report on the exercise of religious freedom," saying that the Russian Orthodox Church could take part in the preparation of materials for this document, which would make it more objective," the Synodal Department for External Church Relations reported on its website.

Beyrle has expressed satisfaction with the reaction of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations to the U.S. State Department report and voiced readiness for interaction with the Russian Church.

During the meeting, Archbishop Hilarion told the U.S. ambassador about the current state of relations between the Church and the state in Russia and the public service by the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Archbishop recalled that traditional religious communities in Russia have made a decisive contribution to the formation of Russia's statehood, which impacts their status and the exercise of religious freedom in Russia, and that "should be taken into account when analyzing the relations between Church and the state."
