09 March 2010, 11:11FSB chief confirms prominent warlord Said Buryatsky's death
Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi area. March 9, Interfax - FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov has confirmed that one of the militants killed recently in a special operation in Ingushetia was prominent warlord Alexander Tikhomirov, known by nickname Said Buryatsky.
"It has been proven absolutely certainly that this was him," Bortnikov said at a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday.
Ten active members of this illegal armed group were detained and eight others, including Tikhomirov, were killed in an exchange of fire.
A laboratory for manufacturing improvised explosive devices was later uncovered at the site of the armed clash, and security forces seized more than one tonne of explosives and a large amount of firearms and ammunition, Bortnikov said.
A group of suspected members of an illegal armed group, including Tikhomirov, were responsible for the Nevsky Express train bombing in November 2009, Bortnikov said.
It was reported earlier that Tikhomirov was believed to be responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus, including an assassination attempt on Ingush President Yunus-bek Yevkurov.
