10 March 2010, 14:54Over 50 Tablighi Jamaat activists sentenced in Tajikistan
Dushanbe, March 10, Interfax - Tajikistan's Supreme Court has convicted 56 followers of the Tablighi Jamaat Muslim movement of publicly calling for violent measures to overthrow the country's authorities.
"The court sentenced 23 citizens of Tajikistan who are members of the Tablighi Jamaat extremist organization to between three and six years in a high-security prison. It also ordered 33 more citizens of the republic to pay fines ranging from 35,000 somoni to 70,000 somoni," the Supreme Court said.
Five Tablighi Jamaat members received sentences ranging from three to six years in prison in Tajikistan in August 2009.
The Tablighi Jamaat religious movement, which does not have official registration, has a large number of followers in South Asia states, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. The authorities of these states do not think that the activities of this organization pose any threat.
Russia, however, has included Tablighi Jamaat in the list of terrorist organizations.
