Senior Kremlin bell-ringer urges the Bolshoi Theatre to return bells to the Church

Moscow, September 17, Interfax - The Moscow Kremlin and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior art director of bell ringing Igor Konovalov is convinced that bells saved by the Bolshoi Theatre from melting in Soviet times should be returned to their historical place in Moscow churches.

"Surely, the bells should be returned, moreover they have inscriptions where they were taken from and when they were cast. We don't bring a throne or an imperial corona from the Armory Chamber if we want to stage Boris Godunov!" Konovalov told an Interfax-Religion correspondent on Friday.

According to him, copies of the bells or audio records can be used for performances in the Bolshoi Theatre as it "absolutely unnecessary", he believes, to have the full set of church bells from several Moscow churches in the theatre.

"It's common practice. The Holy Trinity St.Sergius Laura have bells from the theatre, the Epiphany Cathedral has a bell that once was in a Moscow theatre. And the directors of the Bolshoi Theatre either can't read or are blind not to see letters in Church Slavonic," he said and urged theatre figures to follow the example of Americans who returned church bells from Harvard to St. Daniel Monastery in Moscow.
