18 January 2011, 14:42Rights activist slam idea of "Orthodox dress code"
Moscow, January 18, Interfax - Chairman of the Moscow Helsinki Group Lyudmila Alexeyeva have criticized the proposal made by a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church to create a national dress code for men and women, saying such a code is unacceptable in a secular state.
'It's nonsense. Let people dress they way they like. The next thing they will say is that women shouldn't wear lipstick," Alexeyeva told Interfax commenting on the statement made by Vsevolod Chaplin, the head of the Synodal Department for Church and Society Relations, who said that the way people in Russia behave in public, in schools, and at work is not their "personal affair."
"In Chechnya, women are not allowed to appear in public without head covering. They are now proposing an Orthodox dress code. The next thing they will do is invest some other dress code. As for me, I don't wear mini skirts or [blouses with] low cleavage. However, it's no one's business how I dress. It's time for us to stop limiting people's freedoms," Alexeyeva, 83, said.
