Moscow, April 5, Interfax - Expedition of priest and traveller Feodor Konyukhov has overcome 120 km in the deserts of Ethiopia populated by afar tribes.
"The tribe is believed to be one of the most capricious and unabiding. The situation got more complicated after certain wars as people have many small-arms. Mostly it is our Kalashnikov rifles," organizers of the expedition quoted Father Feodor as saying toInterfax-Religioncorrespondent.
According to the interviewee of the agency, travellers are welcomed: armed men kiss his hands.
"This is the way we traditionally greet a priest, but Afars greet their guests like this. Afars gave two receptions with national dances and songs to honor the Russian traveler. Feodor Konyukhov presented a local chief one of his hand-made icons," organizers said.
Members of the expedition that started several weeks ago travel on camels.
The route totals to 1200 km and a day march is about 30 km.
The expedition is calledThe Ark of the Covenantas its final destination is the town of Aksum where, according to some data, one of the main religious shrines is kept. Tradition says that God's commandments received by Moses on Sinai are kept there.
