Two LGBT activists detained in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, April 9, Interfax - St. Petersburg policemen took two participants in an LGBT picket near the Oktyabrsky concert hall to a police station on Saturday.

"About 40 people were holding the action, and two were taken to a police department to clarify some circumstances," the city police department told Interfax.

Considering the number of people taking part in the picket, it was supposed to be preliminarily agreed upon with a district administration, which was not done, it said.

The two people detained by police had been charged with failure to obey legitimate orders by a police official (Article 19.3 of the Code of Administrative Offences). The police spokesperson did not clarify whether the two would be charged with other offences, including propaganda of homosexuality.

After the recent adoption of city legislation banning propaganda of homosexuality among minors, first detentions took place on April 5. Police apprehended two unemployed men from the Lipetsk region and the Krasnoyarsk territory holding posters saying 'Gay Is OK' near the Youth Art Palace.

A magistrate court, however, returned the detention reports back to police, saying that they had been drawn up incorrectly.
