13 April 2012, 15:02Police obtains image of religious figure Mekhtiyev assassin
Moscow, April 13, Interfax - The police have obtained a photo of the man suspected of killing Muslim religious figure Metin Mekhtiyev, Alexey Bakhromeyev, an official with the Moscow Criminal Search Department, told Interfax.
He recalled that the body of Mekhtiyev, 33, with cuts to the forehead and stab wounds to his neck, was found in Moscow's Second Brestskaya Ulitsa around 2:00 a.m. on April 10. The Investigations Committee has opened a criminal case on the basis of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code (murder).
"The suspected killer was caught on surveillance cameras of the shop visited by the victim," Bakhromeyev said, adding that the photos have been posted on the Moscow police site petrovka38.ru.
According to earlier reports, the investigators are not inclined to believe Mekhtiyev's killing is an ethnic one.
A source in the law enforcement agencies told Interfax several attacks on citizens perpetrated by homeless people were reported in the Byelorussky Railway Station in the early hours of April 10. Those people likely attacked Mekhtiyev, the source said. Mekhtiyev obviously resisted the attackers and was fatally wounded, the source said, adding that the ethnic killing theory has not been confirmed.
In the meantime, the victim's friends and colleagues are inclined to believe the killing is an ethnic one.
