17 April 2012, 14:54Pro-church, anti-gay rally held in central Moscow
Moscow, April 17, Interfax - The Orthodox public plans to hold a rally entitled "For Motherland, Faith, and Sovereignty" in Moscow's Pushkin Square on April 21.
"The protesters plan to toughly criticize the recent provocation in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and other Orthodox churches in Moscow and demand a strict punishment for any desecration of religious and national holy places as a grave crime," the Orthodox public movement Narodny Sobor (which translates as People's Assembly), one of the organizers of the rally, told Interfax-Religion on Tuesday.
The rally participants will also flatly oppose some laws proposed by liberal activists, specifically, the law On Gender Equality, on Culture, On Patronage, etc., saying that some of their provisions "contradict Russian traditional spirituality and culture."
The rally participants will also back the adoption in some Russian regions of the laws banning the propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors and demand the adoption of similar laws in Moscow and at the federal level.
The protesters will also demand that Russia not approve the protocol on Russia's accession to the WTO without a comprehensive public discussion because, according to Narodny Sobor, "some experts believe accession to the WTO will have tragic consequences for Russia's economy."
Signatures for appropriate addresses to the Russian administration will be collected at the protests.
