18 April 2012, 16:02Russian Church official says its proximity to power is a myth
Moscow, April 18, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox church official says it is not close to authorities.
"It's a myth. Certainly, we constantly hold a dialogue with authorities and cooperate with them similar to any religious community in any country - from the United States of America to North Korea. However, it's enough to look attentively at our church texts to see how much critics of power they contain," head of the Synodal Department for Church and Society Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said in his interview with the Itogi magazine.
Commenting on the current antichurch campaign, he said that "some people don't want the society to change, don't want it to have powerful moral dimension, so that any sin, personal or public can be called by its name and condemned."
"They are people from financial circles, people who have access to the corridors of power, a part of expert and information elite. They are afraid that religious feeling will become the basic motivation in people's life, and in this case they will lose their job: they won't be able to manipulate people in certain economic and political purposes. We have to say their worries are justified, but their methods are extremely shameful," the priest said.
