18 April 2012, 17:15Islamist group linked to Al Qaeda neutralized in Azerbaijan
Baku, April 18, Interfax - Azerbaijan's National Security Ministry has neutralized an armed group that was plotting terror attacks in Azerbaijan, the ministry's public relations center said.
The neutralized group was connected with Al Qaeda and its members had undergone training in Iran. The group was crushed in a sting operation, it said.
Investigators have established that the gang was set up by Azeri citizen Vugar Padarov, who also supplied it with weapons and ammunition.
Another member of this group Elmir Nuraliyev, who was also known as Maga, helped gangs affiliated with Al Qaeda stage terrorist attacks and commit other crimes in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus in 2010, the Azeri ministry said.
Padarov and Nuraliyev first met in Dagestan and agreed to launch an anti-constitutional campaign in Azerbaijan, including acts of sabotage at mosques and religious buildings belonging to other faiths.
Nineteen members of this group were neutralized in operations conducted by the National Security Ministry in the capital Baku, the cities of Ganja and Sumqayit, as well as the Qakh, Zaqatala, Shaki, Qusar, Absheron and Khachmaz districts. The gang's leader Padarov and some other members refused to surrender. Padarov was killed.
