Pussy Riot investigation extended

Moscow, April 18, Interfax - The law enforcement agencies have failed to conduct the preliminary investigation into the criminal case opened against the members of the punk group Pussy Riot, who are being prosecuted for conducting a "punk prayer" in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, within the two months allowed by law, the women's defense lawyer Nikolay Polozov told Interfax.

"I have contacted the investigator and he said the investigation has been extended," Polozov said.

He said the investigator did not specify the date until which the investigation has been extended.

The law allows two months for a preliminary investigation into a criminal case, but the period can be extended if the law enforcement agencies need more time.

It was reported that on February 21 several members of the Pussy Riot punk band, wearing masks covering their faces, staged an anti-Putin performance at the Christ the Savior Cathedral. After that, the authorities arrested Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova on March 4, and Yekaterina Samutsevich on March 15, claiming it was them hiding behind the masks. The Pussy Riot stunt prompted an enormous public outcry.
