Police: "no reason" to look for lawyer who said Russia needed sharia courts

Moscow, April 27, Interfax - Russia's police have "no reason" to look for Dagir Khasavov, a lawyer who reportedly left the country in haste after suggesting that sharia courts be introduced in Russia and the Office of the Prosecutor General said it had detected indications of "extremism" in his suggestion, a police source said.

"There are no criminal proceedings against Khasavov at the moment, and so we have no reason to put him on the search list as a suspect or an accused," the source told Interfax after the Russian Society of Political Emigres reported that the lawyer had gone abroad in a hurry.

Nor is there any reason to look for the lawyer as a missing person, the source said. "A person who has gone missing may only be looked for if their family apply for this," he said.

The source said he had information that Khasavov had feared threats and that this was the reason for his departure.
