28 April 2012, 19:56Bulgarian leader, Russian Patriarch discuss two nations' ties
Sofia, April 28, Interfax - Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia discussed the cultural similarity of the Bulgarians and Russians and their religious ties.
"The shared cultural and spiritual legacy of the Bulgarian and Russian peoples is the foundation for relations between the two peoples," said Plevneliev.
Patriarch Kirill said St. Cyril and St. Methodius, Byzantine Greek monks who were missionaries among southern Slavs, did work that "determined the foundations of the cultural similarity of the Bulgarians, the Russians and other Slav peoples."
"The initial missionaries in Russia, who brought in Christian values, were Bulgarian priests," the Patriarch said.
The two peoples have kept their cultural and religious ties over the centuries, with "the heroism of the Russian soldiers who participated in the Russian-Turkish war of liberation of 1877-1878" playing a role in this, Patriarch Kirill said. |
