LGBT website says 17 activists detained during march in St. Pete

St. Petersburg, May 2, Interfax - Seventeen LGBT activists and members of other NGOs were detained during a May Day march in St. Petersburg, which had started near Vosstaniya Square and finished at Konyushennaya Square, the website of the LGBT community Vykhod (Exit) has reported.

Police detained marchers carrying rainbow flags symbolizing the gay movement. Those detained have been taken to police stations to be held administratively liable for propagating homosexuality and refusing to obey police.

"Among those detained are leader of the Russian LGBT network Igor Kochetkov, lawyer Sergey Kondrashov, LGBT activist Maria Yefremenkova, and member of the organization Soldiers' Mothers Yelena Popova," the website says.

It was reported earlier that several participants in a May Day procession in St. Petersburg had been detained on Konyushennaya Square. They did not offer resistance and were put into a police vehicle. Some people in the crowd chanted 'Disgrace' while the detentions were carried out. Andrey Pivovarov, an organizer of the opposition march, told Interfax that the detainees belonged to the city gay community and joined the opposition column.
