Moscow court declines protest against extension of arrest of all Pussy Riot members (updated)

Moscow, May 11, Interfax - The Moscow City Court has declared lawful the prolongation of the arrest of all three members of Pussy Riot band that staged a scandal-provoking action in Christ the Savior Cathedral.

An Interfax correspondent reports that the judicial collegium for criminal cases rejected a cassation plea of the defense of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich and upheld the judgment of the district court prolonging their arrest until June 24.

The defense had asked to cancel the judgment on the extension of the arrest and to replace the measure of restraint for one not involving confinement.

On April 19, the Tagansky District Court prolonged the arrest of three Pussy Riot members until June 24.

On February 21, several members of the feminist Pussy Riot band, their faces covered by masks, performed an anti-Putin song inside the Christ the Savior's Cathedral.

A criminal case was opened on hooliganism charges. Three Pussy Riot girls were arrested.

The Pussy Riot action triggered a broad response. Most of the people condemn the action, but opinions regarding possible punishment vary.
