27 June 2012, 17:13Supreme Court rejects pressure, won't comment on Pussy Riot case
Moscow, June 27, Interfax - Russia's Supreme Court rejects pressure, collective or individual, in relation to specific cases, including the high-profile punk group Pussy Riot case, Supreme Court spokesman Pavel Odintsov told Interfax on Wednesday.
"The court is not a complaints office and it rejects all forms of pressure, whether collective or individual. outside the procedural framework. This goes against the moral-ethical and legal standards," he said.
"The judiciary is not an administrative vertical system. Each link acts independently here and makes independent decisions. As to conflicts, they are tackled by appeal courts and oversight agencies," Odintsov said.
"The announcement by the Supreme Court of its position at the current stage of the investigation into the Pussy Riot case would impact the legality and objectivity of the decisions being made," he said.
"One should understand that the investigation is at its preliminary stage and the case is being heard by lower-level courts. In this connection, any judgment announced by the Supreme Court at this stage would make its own position flawed, especially when the Supreme Court itself will have to participate in the scrutiny," he said.
