Tajikistan chimes in to clamor over Muhammad cartoons

Dushanbe, February 4, Interfax - The Tajik Foreign Ministry has condemned the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Danish and other European publications, in concert with the rest of the Muslim world.

"This is an insulting and provocative act that fails to meet commonly accepted moral and ethical principles and hampers the establishment of warm relations between people, and it will certainly do a disservice to the dialogue between civilizations," Tajik Foreign Ministry information department's head Igor Sattarov said at a press conference on Saturday.

Over 95% of Tajikistan's population are Sunni or Shiite Muslims.

"Tajikistan, where an absolute majority of the population are Muslims, stands for the respect of sacred things, condemns this abhorrent deed, and believes that no goals - either political or ideological - can justify the insulting of people's holy feelings and human values," Sattarov said.

"This outrageous and sacrilegious escapade can only inflame inter-religious hatred and damage the constructive cooperation between the East and the West," he said.
