Moscow City Court orders Pussy Riot members to stay in jail (updated)

Moscow, July 9, Interfax - The Moscow City Court has upheld a lower court order that extended the term of pretrial detention until July 24 for Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, one of the three members of the Pussy Riot punk rock band who was arrested on a "hooliganism" charge in February after a scandalous show inside Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

During a session on Monday, the City Court threw out an appeal from Tolokonnikova's defense against the term extension, an Interfax correspondent reported from the court.


Later the Moscow City Court made similar decision in respect to two other imprisoned Pussy Riot members, Maria Alyokhina and Yelena Samutsevich.

All three girls will remain in custody until July 24.

Several Pussy Riot members, wearing masks covering their faces, staged an anti-Putin performance at the Christ the Savior Cathedral on February 21. The Pussy Riot stunt prompted an enormous public outcry.

Soon afterwards, police opened a criminal case on disorderly conduct charges. Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were arrested on March 4 and Samutsevich on March 15 as those supposedly hiding behind the masks during the performance. Moscow's Tagansky District Court on June 20 extended their pre-trial arrest at least until July 24.
