Protest held near Russian Embassy in Moldova to demand freedom for Pussy Riot

Chisinau, August 16, Interfax - About ten people wearing balaclava helmets protested in front of the Russian Embassy in Moldova on Thursday to demand the release of Pussy Riot punk band members. The protesters were carrying a "Free Pussy Riot" sign and chanted that slogan.

"A person has the right to freely express their opinion; that is not prohibited by law. We think there may be an administrative punishment, but they should not go to prison," a representative of Amnesty International in Chisinau told Interfax.

The picket participants told Interfax they wanted to call attention to the absence of democracy in Russia and the impossibility to freely express an opinion, which differed from the official point of view.

A protester, Igor Stoika, said that the court ruling might disagree with the law.

More protests and pickets in Pussy Riot's defense are possible, the picket members said.

About ten policemen ensured order around the embassy. None of the Russian diplomats met with the protesters.
