Archpriest Nikolay Balshov was born on December 13, 1956, in Moscow.
From 1973 to 1977, he studied at the department of chemistry of the Moscow State University. He graduated from Moscow Seminary in 1991 and from St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1997. He became Candidate of Theology in 1997, and Master of Theology in 2006.
He was ordained priest in 1989 and served at various parishes in the dioceses of Vologda and Novgorod.
Since 1998, he has worked on the staff of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate (DECR MP). Since 2001, he has directed the DECR secretariat for inter-Orthodox relations.
Since 2003 he has been secretary of the commission for dialogue with the Russian Church Outside Russia under the Moscow Patriarchate Holy Synod and since 2005 a member of the DECR commission for Old Belief’s parishes and cooperation with the Old Believers.
Since March 31, 2009, directed the DECR vice-chairman.
