Moscow concerned about armed attacks on Coptic Christians near Cairo

Moscow, October 22, Interfax - Russia condemns the recent attacks on Coptic Christian communities in Egypt.

Two unidentified gunmen fired shots at a wedding party in a Coptic church near Giza on the northern limits of Cairo on October 20, killing three people and injuring more than a dozen others. The police are investigating.

"News about these and other terror attacks have aroused concern and condemnation in Moscow. We must state with concern that representatives of the Coptic community in Egypt and their religious centers have come under attacks, including by gunfire, by criminal elements on many occasions," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.

"We are convinced that an end must be put to such acts of violence in the Egyptian authorities' effort to guarantee stability and security in Egypt. This will help place Egypt on a track of stable political and economic development on the basis of effective and democratically elected institutions of power, with inter-faith peace and national accord preserved," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
