Sergiyev Posad, July 21, Interfax - The Orthodox Church is expected to contribute to peace-making in Middle East, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
Putin said at a meeting with representatives of local Orthodox Churches in the Trinity Laura of St. Sergius he wished Metropolitan Timothy of the Jerusalem Patriarchate success in serving in such a unique place.
Unfortunately, for many years different conflicts occur in this region, the president said.
"And we see again now that conflict escalates there, bloodshed and casualties occur there. We are watching with alarm what is happening there," Putin said.
"But I am certain that the presence of the Orthodox Church there should and will play a positive role in reconciling all conflict parties," he said.
"In the end, everyone comes to peace but it is just important that this path is as short as possible and that the path to peace does not have many casualties," the Russian president said.
