Over forty citizens of Georgia may be fighting in Syria on Islamic State side - media

Tbilisi, October 10, Interfax - Some 200 citizens of Georgia support the Islamic State and 44 of them are fighting in Syria, the Kakheti information center reported on Friday.

A citizen of Georgia, who was not named, said in an interview with the center that the people who have sworn their allegiance to the Islamic State live mainly in the Pankisi Gorge, Ajaria and the region Kvemo Kartli.

"We are expecting orders from the administration of the Islamic State and we are ready to go to war any moment. We are now caring for the families of the fighters who have left Georgia to fight in Syria," the man said.

The man said the number of people who have sworn their allegiance to the Islamic State in Georgia is increasing and that has to do with the name of Tarkhan Batirashvili, an Islamic State field commander, who comes from the Pankisi Gorge.

Two weeks ago, Batirashvili's father Temur Batirashvili, who also lives in the Pankisi Gorge, told reporters he does not maintain contact with his son, who has taken the name Omar al Shishani in Syria.
