Russian sculptor Tsereteli to open a monument to John Paul II at Notre-Dame de Paris

Moscow/Paris, October 24, Interfax - Monument to Pope of Rome John Paul II will open in the public garden at Notre Dame de Paris on Saturday, October 25.

President of the Russia Art Academy, renowned sculptor Zurab Tsereteli told Interfax that 3,6-meter-high bronze monument is a gift of Russian people to the Polish community of Paris.

He said that John Paul II's figure "reflects the tragedy and contradictory character of the 20th century."

According to the author, "alongside with politicians and state-mongers there were spiritual leaders in the past century who personified universal conscience, and John Paul II was called to untangle most complicated and tight knots in relations between Russia (USSR) and Poland."

A divine service will be celebrated before the opening ceremony, it will be translated into Russian. Archbishop of Paris, Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois will officiate the Catholic service, he will also participate in the ceremony.
