IS funded by Afghan heroin profits - FSKN

Moscow, November 26, Interfax - According to Russia's Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN), the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) is being financed by proceeds from selling Afghan heroin.

"It is the large-scale transit of Afghan heroin that acts as a renewable financial base for the functioning of the Islamic State, which extracts eye-watering profits by ensuring half of all heroin supplied to Europe via the destabilized Iraq and several African countries," an FSKN spokesperson said in a statement obtained by Interfax.

Afghan heroin production affects security in Central Asia and the Middle East, the spokesperson said.

"NATO's military Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan led to tectonic shifts in Central Asia, aimed at destabilizing countries in the region," the statement said.
