Lavrov discusses situation in Mideast with OIC secretary-general

Moscow, October 1, Interfax - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Secretary-General Iyad Madani discussed interaction between Russia and the OIC, and the situation in the Middle Eastern region at a meeting on the sidelines of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website on Thursday.

Lavrov and Madani "exchanged judgments regarding the situation in the Middle East, emphasized the importance of the soonest possible political settlement of the conflict situations in the region, and noted the significance of preserving the status quo of the holy sites in Jerusalem," the ministry said.

Lavrov and Madani also appreciated the work of the consultation mechanisms existing between Russia and the OIC, and discussed interaction in various fields, it said.
