Ufa, October 22, Interfax - Over 1,000 residents of Bashkortostan have joined the extremist organization ISIL, Central Spiritual Muslim Board of Russia Chairman Talgat Tajuddin has said.
"Some 1,200 in Bashkortostan," the mufti answered a question from reporters in Ufa on Thursday.
"This is a consequence of the free rein given to foreign centers, so-called Islamic and others, in the early 1990s. They felt completely free for many years in Bashkortostan, in Russia and in near abroad, CIS countries. These are the fruit," the mufti said.
There is no threat of new followers from Bashkortostan joining the terrorist organization now, he said.
"They are fleeing in women's clothes, what should they join? There is nothing left to join, there are no bases left," Tajuddin said.
