Yerevan, November 9, Interfax - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regards the multilateral Vienna talks on Syria as the main format of negotiating this problem and sees the need for the process to be joined by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"Another meeting in a broad format is due to be held in the very near future. I think this is the main format, if not the only one, we consider it necessary to add the Arab League and OIC to the list," Lavrov told a press conference after talks with his Armenian counterpart in Yerevan.
"The participation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation is important because there have been attempts to portray the Syrian conflict as one between the Sunnis and Shias. We suggested that the OIC secretary-general be directly involved in the talks," the minister said.
The OIC secretary-general should participate in the talks "to prevent such an interpretation and to support our efforts to prevent a continuation of the crisis," Lavrov said.
