Ukrainian secret agencies claim detention of one of Al-Nusra Front leaders

Kiev, November 13, Interfax - The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained one of the leaders of the Al-Nusra Front, the international terrorist organization, who was on the international wanted list.

"The citizen of one of the former USSR republics took part in the Syrian armed conflict in 2013-2014. The combatant became head of a separate jamaat of the international terrorist organization Al-Nusra Front in 2015," the SBU press service said in a report published on Friday.

SBU did not elaborate on what particular country the detainee comes from.

Kiev's Shevchenko District Court opted for an extradition arrest as a preventive measure for the foreigner, while the state prosecution agencies initiated the procedure of extradition.

On November 11, Ukrainian border guards detained a citizen of Russia who was possibly a member of the Islamic State international terrorist group at the Borispol international airport in the Kiev Region.

"During the check-in before a Kiev-bound flight from Istanbul, the officers of the Ukrainian State Border Service detained a citizen of the Russian Federation who is on the international wanted list and suspected of participation in the terrorist group Islamic State. The Interpol National Bureau for Ukraine was informed about the detention of the Russian citizen," the press service of Ukraine's State Border Service reported on Thursday.

The detainee was handed over to the police after procedural measures were taken.
