Up to 10,000 ISIL militants have origins in CIS countries - Syrian ambassador to Russia

St. Petersburg, November 20, Interfax - The Syrian authorities estimate the number of people with origins in CIS countries fighting for the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) (outlawed in Russia) at 10,000.

"Currently, about 10,000 ISIL fighters come from CIS countries," Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad told reporters in St. Petersburg on Friday.

Syria fully coordinates its steps in the fight against terrorism with the Russian administration, the ambassador said.

A Syrian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Walid Muallem is due to visit Moscow shortly, the diplomat said.
