Sochi resident sentenced to 4.5 years for incitement to religious hatred in social media

Sochi, May 17, Interfax - The Central District Court of Sochi has found a local resident, Khusein Makhauria, aged 20, guilty of public justification of terrorism, the press service of the Investigative Department of the Russian Investigative Committee for the Krasnodar Region told Interfax on Tuesday.

According to the information of investigators, a young man using his mobile phone had published on his page in a social network texts of an extremist nature during the period from February 2014 to July 2015. Following linguistic evaluation it was established that the texts also contained statements calling for the conducting of terrorist activities or justification of terrorism and urging acts of hostilities towards representatives of a certain ethnic or religious group.

The charges against him were brought under two Articles, 'Public justification of terrorism' and 'Incitement of hatred or enmity on ethnic, religious and social grounds', of the Russian Criminal Code.

The court sentenced him to four years and six months' imprisonment in a penal colony settlement.
