Putin offers condolences to Canadian PM on death of people in attack on Quebec mosque

Moscow, January 30, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered condolences to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on an attack on a mosque in Quebec.

"This murder of people who had gathered at a mosque to pray is staggering in its cruelty and cynicism," the Kremlin website quoted the president as saying in a telegram sent to Trudeau on Monday.

Putin asked the Canadian prime minister to convey words of sincere compassion and support to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes of a speedy recovery to the injured.

In the early hours of Monday, Moscow time, unidentified individuals broke into a Quebec mosque during evening prayers and opened fire.

According to local police, six people were killed in the attack and eight more were injured.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and the authorities of Quebec classified the crime as a terrorist attack.
