Merkel says asks Putin to address problem of gays in Chechnya, guarantee their rights

Sochi, May 2, Interfax - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene in the situation surrounding the rights of homosexuals in Chechnya.

"I also spoke of the very negative report about what is happening to homosexuals in Chechnya and asked Mr. President to exert his influence to make sure that the minorities' rights are protected," Merkel said at a press conference following talks with Putin in Sochi on Tuesday.

The same concerns the Jehovah's Witnesses organization, she said.
