Kiev gay pride parade participants set upon by group of men three hours after event

Kiev, June 19, Interfax - Police in Kiev have apprehended one of the men who assaulted participants of an Equality March in central Kiev three hours after the event ended, a spokesperson for the National Police main directorate in Kiev Oksana Blishchik said.

"The incident occurred in Contract Square three hours after the event concluded: the victims are receiving medical aid, and their assailant has been delivered to the Podolsky police department. The search for the other assailants is under way," she wrote on her Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.

So far it has been established that a group of unknowns ran up to the men, sprayed gas into the face of one of them and inflicted bodily injuries on another, the spokeswoman said.

One of the assailants was caught and delivered to the police department. The man is a Kiev resident, born 1995. His balaclava, pepper spray and mouth guard have been seized.

The victims, born 1980 and 1984, were hospitalized by ambulance.

"The event was duly registered, the question of opening a criminal inquiry is being decided. The search for the assailant's accomplices is under way," Blishchik said.
