Moscow, October 16, Interfax - Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk says the manner of rapping is close to saying church prayers and welcomes successful missionary activity of priests among rap fans.
On air the Church and the World program on Rossiya-24 television channel he positively evaluated works by priest Maxim Kurlenko who made a video on a rap song and was not afraid to step into youthful subculture. Besides, Metropolitan Hilarion confesses that he sees something similar between church traditions and rap as prayers and rap songs are said monotonously.
"If the Church learns to use the existing arsenal of musical and other means demanded today to bear good, light and convey eternal truth of Christ, I can only support it," head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations said.
At the same time, he said that when he was preparing for the program he watched other rap videos popular among young people, which promote debauchery and drug-addiction, and use offensive language.
"I was horrified. One of such songs got 40 million 'likes' in YouTube, and all people who watch it are young people. So every attempt of the Church to enter the sphere of the youth subculture in order to enchurch this sphere and fill it with kind and fair impulses deserves support," the hierarch said.
