Moscow, December 1, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hopes the Russian Orthodox Church will use its authority in the world to help rebuild Syria.
"I hope that the Russian Orthodox Church will use its authority in the world to assist the unification of the efforts of the global community to revive Syria and humanitarian assistance to its citizens, to rebuild destroyed spiritual and cultural centers," Putin said at the Bishops' Council in Moscow on Friday.
The president said he has discussed this issue with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and knows his position.
"We are ready to support all religions and all Christian denominations. All without exception. We have this capability now, and we are ready for this joint work," Putin said.
Patriarch Kirill called the president's attendance at the Council a historical event.
"It is impossible not to think of the complex relations between the church and the state" in the 20th century in the year of the 100th anniversary of the 1917 revolution, he said. The patriarch also said that "moral consensus" is important to society.
