Archbishop of Cyprus objects to politics' interference in affairs of Orthodox Church in Ukraine Stepashin

Moscow, October 8, Interfax - Sergey Stepashin, the chairman of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society and a former Russian prime minister, has discussed the situation surrounding the Orthodox Church in Ukraine with Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus.

"The archbishop of Cyprus expressed his concern about the situation surrounding the Orthodox Church and spoke in favor of strengthening unity," Stepashin said in a telephone interview with Interfax.

"The archbishop of Cyprus supported the idea to hold a conference of all local Orthodox Churches and objected to interference of politicians in the affairs of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine," he said.

Stepashin said also that, while visiting Cyprus, he met with the president and chairman of the parliament of that country to discuss "bilateral relations between Russia and Cyprus and aspects of religious pilgrimage."
