Kiev, December 18, Interfax - The Pyotr Poroshenko Bloc faction in Verkhovnaya Rada calls on its colleagues in the parliament to create a working group to draft bills on church issues, Igor Kononenko, first deputy head of the faction, said.
"Firstly, we need to legislatively regulate the names of churches in Ukraine. If its center is located in Moscow, it should be called the Ukrainian Metropolitanate of Russian Orthodox Church. And the autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church is one and it is led by Metropolitan Yepifaniy," the faction press service quoted Kononenko as saying.
The Verkhovnaya Rada is also expected to settle the issue of transition of communities to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, including issues relating to property protection.
"I do hope that the working group will promptly draft relevant legislative initiatives and the parliament will adopt them this week," Kononenko said.
According to earlier reports, the unification assembly in Kiev announced the creation of the local Orthodox Church of Ukraine on December 15. Yepifaniy Dumenko was elected head of the unified church.
